Girls MAP Inc Scholarships

Girls MAP Inc is excited to announce the launch of its 2023 scholarship program. 

To celebrate her grandmother turning 90, Eyitemi Popo, founder of Girls Trip Tours, is creating the ‘Teresa E. Chukuma’ scholarship. The legacy scholarship is inspired by a woman who has dedicated her life to women’s issues and embodies the idea that “when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.”

We are offering full scholarships to attend Alt School Africa. You can apply for a scholarship to complete a program at their school of data, product or software engineering. As the name suggests, AltSchool Africa is different from traditional institutions. They are a school for individuals looking to gain technical skills and kickstart a career in Tech. No prior experience in tech is required. Like Chief. Mrs. Teresa E. Chukuma, a woman ahead of her time, we want to prepare the next generation of young women with future-proof skills that actually pay the bills.

Eligibility: 

Individual students may apply or organizations on behalf of their students.

• Students self-identifying as female

• Students between the ages of 16 - 21

• Students based in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe or Kenya

• Students must not be currently enrolled in any other academic program

• Shortlisted applicants must pass the Alt School entrance exam. (We will pay for the entrance exam fee.)

How to Apply:

Complete this application by January 12th 2023 (CLOSED). Shortlisted applicants will be invited to apply to Alt School Africa and those successful in passing the entrance exam and the Girls MAP interview, will be named scholars.

The scholarships will cover tuition for one-full year at Alt School Africa, plus monthly data costs during the program and access to mentoring from our community to ensure high completion rates.

About Chief Mrs. Teresa E. Chukuma, MNI

As a girl in Mbaise, Imo state, Nigeria, young Teresa was an exceptional student and was selected to study at the prestigious Cornelia Connelly College in Uyo. She graduated third in her class despite being severely ill in hospital with meningitis right before her final exams. 

Young Teresa was then selected to study in England. She completed her A-levels in London before going on to St. Andrews University in Scotland to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Geography. After completing her Master’s degree, she backpacked through Europe before returning to Nigeria where she went from teacher to principal. She was appointed the founding principal of Federal Government College Lagos and was the second indigenous principal of the famed Queen’s College, Yaba in Lagos.

She is living proof that “when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.”

Mrs. Teresa E. Chukuma also had a prolific career as a diplomat. She was the first Nigerian woman to serve as a deputy permanent delegate at UNESCO in Paris in the 1970s. She is also among the first Nigerian women to reach the highest level at the ministry of education where she had a hand in redesigning the Nigerian education system to the current 6-3-3-4 format. She is living proof that “when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.”

When Nigeria celebrated its centenary, she was one of the 100 history-making women honored at the occasion. Most inspiring to me is that she accomplished all this as a mother of seven who has visited over 40 countries.
